How the event code handles dates and time zones

The code contains an iCalendar VEVENT (RFC 5545), the same format calendar invitations use. Phone cameras offer to add it to the default calendar.

    • UTC (recommended): enter the times as they are on the clock at the venue and pick the venue’s time zone. They are converted to UTC, daylight saving included, so the event shows at the right moment on every phone, in any country.
    • Floating: the time is kept as written, with no zone. 9:00 means 9:00 wherever the phone is. Use it for things like “take your medicine at 9”.
    • All-day events use plain dates. The end date you pick is the last day; the code stores the day after, as the standard requires.

Commas, semicolons and line breaks in the title, place and details are escaped. If a time falls into the hour skipped when clocks go forward, you get a warning. Tick Full iCalendar file for strict calendar apps; it makes the code a little denser.

    Frequently asked questions

Can I add a reminder or a repeat?

Not here. Reminders and repeats make the code denser and phone scanners often ignore them. People can add them in their calendar after saving.

Which time zone should I choose?

The zone of the venue, or of the organiser for online events. Guests in other countries then see the time converted to their own clock.

The event shows at the wrong hour. Why?

Usually the wrong time zone was picked, or floating time was used for an online event. Check the DTSTART line in the Encoded text: a time ending in Z is UTC.
