How the Wi-Fi QR code works
The code holds a short text in the format phones look for, such as WIFI:T:WPA;S:Home;P:secret;;. The camera apps on iPhone and Android recognise it and offer to join the network. Nothing connects until the person taps to confirm.
- WPA / WPA2 / WPA3 writes
T:WPA, the type every scanner understands. Use it for almost all home and office routers, including WPA3 networks in transition mode. - WPA3 only writes
T:SAE, the way Android shares WPA3-only networks. Scanners that predate WPA3 may not recognise it. - Hidden network adds
H:trueso the phone looks for a network that does not broadcast its name.
Backslashes, semicolons, commas, colons and quotes in the name or password are escaped automatically, so a password like p;ss,word still works.
Frequently asked questions
Is my Wi-Fi password sent anywhere?
No. The code is built in your browser and the password stays on this device. Remember that anyone who scans the printed code can read the password, so print guest-network codes, not the one for your main network.
What happens when I change the password?
The old code stops working, because the password is stored in the code itself. Generate and print a new one.
Why does my phone not offer to join?
Check the network name character by character, and that you are in range. Some older Android phones need a scanner app or the Wi-Fi settings screen’s own QR button instead of the camera.
