Contact details
vCard or MECARD?
vCard 3.0 is the contact format every phone, mail app and CRM imports. It keeps separate fields for job title, each phone type and a structured address. MECARD is a compact format from Japanese mobile networks that iPhone and Android cameras also read. It makes a smaller, less dense code but stores less: a single phone list and no job title field (it goes into the note).
Tips for a code that scans
- Every field adds data and makes the pattern denser. Leave out what people do not need, especially on small business cards.
- Write phone numbers with the country code, like +44 or +1, so they work from abroad.
- Commas, semicolons and line breaks are escaped for you, so “Smith, Jones & Co; London” survives intact.
Nothing you type is uploaded: the card is assembled in your browser. Check the Encoded text panel to see exactly what the code contains.
Frequently asked questions
Can I add a photo to the contact?
Not in practice. A photo would need thousands of bytes, far more than a QR code that a phone can read from a business card.
Can I update the details later?
No. The details live inside the code, so a new phone number means a new code. If your details change often, link the code to a page you control instead.
Why vCard 3.0 and not 4.0?
Version 3.0 is the one every phone imports without trouble. Version 4.0 support is still patchy in camera apps.
